As I said in a previous post, I attended the Farm Fresh RI Local Food Forum a few weeks ago. I thought I already knew how to eat seafood responsibly, but the information presented at the forum was very eye opening. The story of how our seafood is harvested, processed, marketed, sold, and consumed in this country is incredibly complicated. But there are several individuals and organizations in New England who are implementing innovative solutions to preserve both wild stocks of fish, our environment, and local economies. It seems that we are on the edge of a whole new era of seafood management and consumption and I’d like to explore it all in greater depth in a series called “Hooked on Sustainability; creating a sustainable seafood economy in Rhode Island.” Stay tuned for the first post next week!
